WTF is Going On With The Women's Tennis Team?!?!??!

You may or may not know (I certainly did not know) that PSU has a relatively new tennis coach.  Dawna Prevette was hired back in 2007 and things seem to be going well early on.  The gritty Texan seemed to be bringing a tough, hard-nosed attitude to tennis.

Much seems to have changed in the last two years as the Collegian is now reporting that she might be a power obsessed lunatic who will suspend or dismiss players with only the slightest provocation.  The accusations are just about the oddest things you've ever heard of.  For example:

1.  A player alleges Prevette misled her during the recruiting process.
2.  Kicking players off of a team for "lack of eye contact"
3.  Suspending players for removing a slice of pepperoni from a slice of pizza.

I mean, what the fuck is going on with the women's tennis team??!?!?!

When collegian reporters spoke with the coach this is, apparently, what happened:

"If they don't want to work hard and be competitive and fight and improve, then maybe this isn't the place for them," said Prevette, who denied the story about Zobeideh's suspension before asking a Collegian reporter to leave her office.

I get the impression that the coach might not be that warm and fuzzy, which is fine.  But to suspend a player for taking a slice of pepperoni off of her own pizza?  For dismissing another from the team for lack of eye contact?  You would have to be a crazy person to believe that these are acceptable reasons to discipline players.

I don't know what is going on her but it certainly isn't good.

Remember, keep that fucking pepperoni on your pizza or Coach Prevette will fucking kill you.

I'm Drunk On Spring Football.... And Wine

This is what I'm talking about.

ESPN has caught the fever. I'm personally rocking a fever of a hundred and three.

The only cure? More Penn State Football. Will I last another 3.5 months? Stay tuned.

However, this is a love that needs to be sung from the highest point known to man...space. I love Darryl Clark. I may also have a man-crush on Sean Lee. Apparently, Adam Rittenberg shares my man-love, not really. He is a "journalist", I am but a lowly blogger. Regardless. I am fired up in a way that only a bottle of wine and the high-expectations-of-spring can bring.

Mr. Rittenburg makes a good point. The Lions need to post another championship season in order to assert the alpha-position of the Big Ten. Like many packs, force is necessary to run the show.

There are some folks on ESPN who think that PSU will finish no better than third in the Big Ten. I think PSU will be first or second. I see the Buckeyes as the only real threat to the Lions' chances to win the conference championship. Disagree? Post your gripes below.

76,500 pack Blue-White Game

That is really awesome. Over 75k showing up to a practice is awesomely
ridiculous. It was great to see the team back on the field.

More to come later.

I have decided the football offseason is like having an angry old
woman kicking you in the balls for seven months except for one blessed
day when you get to enjoy the sport/team you love while dreaming of a
Saturday where you can watch 12-14 hrs of football.

I love PSU!

I love college football!

Blue White game is finally here!

I'm super excited to see, analyze, talk about and speculate on the
game. I still think Chaz Powell is the guy to watch.

The WRs and Chaz Powell

Editor's note: This was going to be part of a larger post evaluating several positions to look for during the Blue/White game.  However, work is really kicking my ass right now so the post has been shortened into what can fairly be described as a fan-boy-fluff-piece about Chaz Powell.  Enjoy!

The Blue-White game is coming up this weekend so now is the time to talk about what we want to see out of certain positions and players.

A lot of what we want to see is the development of the young wide receiving corps and the equally young defensive secondary.  The young WRs are tall and fast and but have seen limited action over the past few years. There is also a lot of chatter about Chaz Powell moving to the role that D-Will held last year.  The possibility of seeing more, a lot more, of Chaz Powell is something that you should be getting very excited about.  Check it out:

Powell lead the team in average yards per: Run, Reception, and Kick Return!  CP averaged 9.2 yards per rush, 18.5 yards per reception, and 28.8 yards per kick return.  This kid is one of the most explosive players on the team and hopefully we will see him get a lot of action this fall.  The Blue White game could be a  coming out party for CP just as it was for Stepfon Green last year.

I will now take you to a happy place.  Picture this, Penn State lines up with Moye, and Brackett at the two WR positions, Powell in the slot, Royster and Green flanking Clark in the shotgun.  Think of all you can do with this!  My personal favorite would be to motion Green into the other slot position or overload one side and let Clark read the defense for a great matchup or to just hand the ball to Royster now that the defense is spread extremely thin.  Will we see this in the spring game?  Probably not, however, we probably won't see anything this complicated until 5 games into the season.

I AM FIRED UP!

Reasonable People Hate TOSU!

The 2003 Wisconsin vs. Tosu game on ESPN Classic. You may remember this game as the one where the Ohio State player (Robert Reynolds) fucking chokes Jim Sorgi on the field just before kneeing him in the head.

It is this sort of behavior that makes all reasonable people hate the Buckeyes.

Quick Injury Update

We are starting to get some info on injuries suffered during spring practice.  There was a rumor floating around that Chaz Powell injured his ankle in practice the other day, however, Paterno dispelled that rumor in a teleconference with the press yesterday, which you can read about at the Collegian.  This is great news that CP is healthy because I think Powell will be a big part of the offense in 2009.

The same story also breaks the bad news that AJ Wallace has pulled a hamstring which is making it tough for the inexperienced secondary to gel.  This is a quite a blow to a young secondary who needs all the time they can get to play together.  The Hammy is also an injury that can really stay with a guy so I wouldn't expect to see AJ during the spring game.

The PTR also has a story about the Secondary's quest to become a cohesive unit.

I can't wait for the blue-white game!

Weekend Wrap-up

Over the weekend there were a few things which caught my eye.

First, I found a new Penn State podcast to listen to.  It is called the Lions Pride Show.  I gave it a listen over the weekend.  It is a good podcast when they focus in on PSU Football, however, they wander over to the NCAA tournament which can get a little stale.

On a hilarious note, Scout.com is reporting that a mere 6,160 fans showed up to Pitt's spring game.  It would be sad if it weren't so funny!

Jaypa Is On TWITTER!

Thank you Jebus, Jaypa is on TWITTER!  You can find him right here.  This is exactly the sort of thing that a fan needs to get him through the off-season.

I seriously doubt that Jay's twittering can be as interesting and Pete Carrol's, however, we can only hope that it gets weird or for a possible drunken tweet.  I would honestly chop off the tip of my pinkie finger for a drunken-Jay-tweet-fest.

Sweet mother of crap today is a good day.

I saw and got all of this from Nittanydelphia!

I Miss Football

Early Spring Scrimmage

The Lions had an early scrimmage this weekend in which we got a little peak at the the depth chart as it stands today. The CDT has the story, however, what does it all mean?

The CDT relates that Clark looked good throwing both short routes and deep balls very accurately. Great. I am glad. The simple fact of the matter is that Clark should be an accurate passer and he should look really good in spring practice when he is the only player wearing a red jersey. What is interesting is how the rest of the QBs on the roster looked.

This is what the CDT had to say about Kevin Newsome:

Working with the second team for all but a few snaps, true freshman Kevin Newsome had an up-and-down afternoon. His passes, thrown with a three-quarter, sidearm motion, had zip but often missed his intended targets. He seemed jumpy in the pocket, though defensive linemen from both the first and second-team defenses gave him little time to throw. Newsome looked much more comfortable — and more efficient — as a ball carrier, displaying good patience, vision and speed with a low-to-the- ground style.

I am not surprised that Mr. Newsome looked "jumpy" as this was his first time in a game-like situation with players with college speed and size bearing down on him. All this without the benefit of a red jersey. I think that is enough to make anybody "jumpy". Regardless of how he felt in the pocket I am more concerned with the description of his delivery: sidearm. As players get bigger and bigger the proper mechanics will help to keep the ball away from the paws of defensive linemen. I know that there have been plenty of successful QBs who haven't had perfect mechanics; however, it certainly doesn't help. Newsome's ability to run the ball is, of course, what we were all excited about when we recruited him. Also, while the kid's mechanics may not be perfect, athletic freakishness cannot be taught. Better passing mechanics can be worked out over the next year. Let's not forget that Newsome is only practicing right now because he enrolled in school early. This extra spring package certainly gives him a lot of extra experience with the offense to try to become the back up QB.

Matt McGloin also took several snaps.

Redshirt freshman walk-on Matt McGloin showed the difference between a freshman and a player with a year of college experience, even if that experience came on the scout team. Though he lacked the arm strength of Clark and Newsome, McGloin was accurate on short balls and deep balls, at one point connecting with fellow walk-on and Philipsburg-Osceola alumnus J.D. Mason for considerable gains on consecutive plays.

This is what I want to see out of McGloin. He doesn't have to be flashy, but the Lions definitely need a guy who can come in and throw the ball accurately when the team needs him too. A better understanding of the offense --- as well as accuracy --- seems to point to McGloin being the back up QB for the 2009 season. It is impossible to comment on McGloin's ability to run the ball, however, should he not be as effective running as passing it would be interesting to see Newsome come in to run a limited "Wild Lion" package at some points.

Zug, Moye, and Brackett all saw a lot of snaps at WR. WR is a position that the Lions really need to develop nicely this spring after the departure of the most productive WR corps in Penn State history. Now, every one of these guys is going to have to show us significant development if the Lions want to be as productive through the air as they were last year. One interesting thing to note is that every one of these guys is over six feet tall, in fact, Brackett and Moye are 6' 6" and 6' 5" respectively. How interesting will it be to go from a decidedly undersized group of WRs to a very large group of players. Jump Balls here we come!

Needless to say, the newly assembled OL will have to play very well for PSU to have a great season. I am not expecting a dominating year from the OL as they are young but they are particularly young on the left side of the line.

The firstteam offensive line included sophomore DeOn’tae Pannell at left tackle, redshirt freshman Matt Stankiewitch at left guard, Stefen Wisniewski at center, junior Lou Eliades at right guard and Dennis Landolt at right tackle.

A lot of folks are complaining about the 2009 schedule as it is very heavy on the cupcakes early in the year. However, that schedule will be a giant help to a very young offensive line and give them an opportunity to get some consistency up front. With a little experience this crew could start to play some good ball when PSU gets to the meat of its schedule.

Ahh spring, a time of unbridled potential and possible delusion.

I just can't wait for the Blue/White game!

BTW, SPRING PRACTICE IS HERE!

It has been fun to watch the the NCAA tournament and Penn State's run to the finals of the NIT.  However, the big dog on the block has started to stir with the coming of the 2009 spring practice.  Players are hitting the sleds and everyone is getting anxious to get into pads and make somebody pay.

Paterno seems to have fully recovered from off-season hip surgery but has been left steaming from the loss USC handed to the Lions in the Rose Bowl.  Clark and Sean Lee recently gave the following quotes to Bob Flounders of the Patriot News:

Clark:
"[Quarterbacks coach] Jay [Paterno] told me that Joe was really upset about that game,'' Clark said today in State College.

Lee:
"We came back and we went right back [to work],'' Lee continued. "This is probably the longest winter workout that I've been a part of. ... I think [Paterno] didn't like the way we went out.''

Speaking of Clark and Sean Lee both players will be back for their final year at PSU and both will be the leader on their respective sides of the ball.

Clark is thinking big during spring practice this year saying:

"Anything's possible," Clark said. "A lot of people counted us out last year, and we shocked a lot of people. But we didn't shock ourselves. We knew what we were capable of doing."

This despite the fact that Clark will be dealing with a brand new offensive line and an inexperienced wide receiving corps.  Some of the photos floating around out there show a Clark who looks visibly bigger and stronger and is really starting to LOOK like MRob did in 2005.  Clark isn't nearly as explosive as Robinson was, however, with a year of experience under his belt Clark will definitely be a bigger offensive threat than Mike was, at least, as long as these young receivers hold onto the ball.

The Sean Lee Man Crush is back in full effect.  The gritty, hard-hitting MLB is back at practice and is clearly ready to kill a man.  The only bad news is that the only people Sean will be folding up, in the short term, will be other Lions.

"I know if I had to play, I could play tomorrow. They might just be being cautious.''

"I'm going to find a way, probably, to hit at some point,'' Lee continued.

"You know, 7 on 7 drill, wide receiver catches the ball, we've got pads on, I gotta hit him.''

This is what I am talking about.  I am officially fired up for the Blue-White game!
