The AP Poll and its Wisdom

The AP, in all their exalted wisdom, has released their initial pre-season poll. Although to look around at all the blogpolling going around one wonders why we put any stock in these polls at all. (Hooray! I voted for Tosu! I'm a weirdo!)

The AP has decided to put PSU at #19, same as in the USA Today poll. Find them both here.

Polls are great, who doesn't love polls? But as much as I love polls the preseason variety might be the most useless thing on earth. No poll should come out until after all the games of week three have been played. I think the idea originated with Michael Wilbon, at least that's where I first heard it, but its a good idea. Think about it, after three weeks PSU will have already played ND and will be about to play Tosu. Will we know if PSU is for real after ND? In short, yes. Will we know more about Tosu after they travel to Texas? Of course. But for now lets revel in the glory of the poll. I'm a homer but I'm fine with a #19 rank for Penn State. But it needs to be said again, if PSU is undefeated after week 4 they simply must be #1. They will have beaten ND and Tosu on the road (#1&2 in the AP, and 1&3 in the USA Today).
