The off-season is the time for speculation and dreaming of the glory that awaits in the coming season. That's why we posed a question regarding how Penn State was going to fare in the 2010 season.
The possible results were that Penn State wins the following number of games: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12?
Over 180 votes later, 22% of our readers think that PSU will win 8 games. 35% believe that PSU will claim 9 victories and that 21% are convinced PSU will win 10 games. Any of these outcomes are perfectly plausible.
Personally, I think that PSU will win 8 games this year based on the facts that PSU is inexperienced at quarterback and unproven on the offensive line. This, combined with the fact that PSU has a murderous road schedule leads me to believe that PSU is going to fall 4 times this year.
However, the folks who believe that PSU will win nine games aren't really optimists, rather, they simply believe that PSU will win all the games in which they are favored. Certainly not unreasonable position. Really, nobody should be surprised regardless of the outcome of this season.
One thing is for sure, this season should be a great ride.

Does the Big Ten Still Suck?
PSU beat LSU on New Year's Day and solidified the fact that the Lions had a real quality season. However, it is now time to consider how the performance of the rest of the Big Ten performed during bowl season. The perception of the strength of a team's conference matters a lot. For example, should it not be perfectly clear who should play in the MNC the voters will try their best to put the team who played in the toughest conference into the title game.
All year the Big Ten has taken a beating over the perception that the Big Ten is down as a conference. Well, it is time again to take a look at the numbers and compare the conferences.
The Big Ten
The Big Ten had seven bowl-eligible teams; Iowa, Ohio St., PSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Michigan St. PSU, Wisconsin, and Ohio State all won their bowl games while Minnesota, Northwestern, and Michigan St. lost. Which, by itself, is pretty interesting. Iowa's win makes it quite clear that the upper echelon teams in the B10 are damned good while the real weakness of the conference is in the second tier teams.
The B10 is sitting at 4-3, this certainly isn't the trumpeting of a return to being a great conference, however, it certainly shows that the conference isn't as terrible as everyone thinks.
The SEC
The SEC got a spectacular 10 teams into post-season play. Right now, five teams were victorious and four teams lost with Alabama yet to play. This is certainly a good record but it isn't exactly setting the world on fire either.
The Pac-10
The Pac-10 got seven teams into post-season play. The Pac-10 only managed to win two of their bowl games with five of the teams losing. Thus far, they are the worst of the BCS conferences. Welcome to the bottom of the pile. Only USC and UCLA managed to win their bowl games while Oregon St., Arizona, Stanford, Oregon, and Cal all lost.
The Big East
The Big East really surprised me. The Big East fielding six teams with four of them coming up victorious. Who knew?
The ACC
Six teams got in from the ACC and the conference went 3-3.
So, the numbers tell us the conference rank as follows:
1. Big East
2(A). SEC
3.(B) Big10
4. ACC
5. Pac10

Why It Is Important TO YOU That TOSU Win On Saturday!
Wait. What?
Yeah, that's right. This blog is usually nothing but a deep yawning chasm of hate for The Ohio State University, however, now we must unite behind our Big Ten brethren. I will try to lay out a case for why it is critical for Tosu to beat USC.
Thus far, only one Big Ten team has even played a top 25 opponent; this happened in week one when Illinois lost to Missouri by ten. That is the width and breadth of the Big Ten's "tough" out of conference schedule. (OrSU could've been a second tough game but that just didn't work out). This being the case, the Big Ten doesn't have the best record so far this year when it comes to OOC games. The media was already believing before the year started that the Big Ten was the third best conference in the country. Similarly, people seem to be worshiping at the alter of the SEC and the PAC-10 like never before.
The simple fact of the matter is that Tosu is viewed as the cream of the Big Ten this year. Should the buckeyes fall to USC it demotes the entire conference. Without a strong Ohio State the Big Ten will be relegated to share the fortunes of the ACC and Big East. Not only will Ohio State be denied a shot at the national title but the other Big Ten teams will be relegated to obscurity by association. Perception has a lot to do with how tough a conference is viewed.
Don't Believe me? You need to have at least four very good teams inside the conference in order to generate enough big games to build the convince the voters to get your teams considered for the championship. Right now the Big Ten has Tosu, Wisc., Illinois, and PSU as the best of the conference. However, Illinois already has a loss out of conference, Ohio State has a real possibility of joining them after this week. This would leave PSU and Wisconsin as the two undefeated teams, both of whom stand a reasonable to good chance of losing at least one game. This scenario does not bode well for the Big Ten.
As such, Go Buckeyes! Only as to this game against USC and in basically no other venue! (mild vommitting in the corner)
I think that was the hardest thing I've ever written.

LSU Vs. OSU: An Awesome First Half
That was an amazing first half. OSU jumps all over LSU early with a 65 yd. run for a TD followed by a great drive for a field goal. After the first five minutes of the game, it was all LSU as they scored 24 unanswered points to take a 24-10 lead (and they will get the ball back to start the second half!)
The real difference in this game has been the play of the QBs. Compare:
Flynn (LSU): 11/15 for 118 yds and 2 TDs!
Boeckman (Tosu): 6/13 for 111 yds and 1 INT.
That being said, the Buckeyes are running the ball extremely well. The only thing that could stop them on the ground would be a vaguely disease ridden prostitute (on sale mind you!). Wells has over 100 Yds. in the first half.
If the Buckeyes, and thereby the Big Ten, are to regain standing in this game, and thereby in reality, they are going to have to lock down on defense and create some fucking turnovers!
LSU the path to victory is easy: run the rock, kill the clock. Captain "Les-ticles" will not be satisfied with that. He smells blood. He has his foot on the neck of the Buckeyes. HE DEMANDS SATISFACTION! And that will be his undoing!
LETS GO BIG TEN!

Quarless and Harriott
Will be back for the Buffalo game. Probably. The Collegian is reporting that the Dynamic-Drinking-Duo is out of the doghouse and will play if they are ready.
Speaking of Michigan, there are some things circulating on chat-boards and in general conversation about which team one should cheer for on saturday; Michigan or Notre Dame. The answer is clear, you have to cheer for Michigan. The conference needs Michigan to be a good team to strengthen the conference.
Lets just hope Michigan doesn't put the keys away and learn how to cheer before PSU comes to town.

Mickey Shuler played pretty well against FIU (54 yds. & a TD) but he didn't do anything against ND. The simple fact of the matter is that Shuler seems like he would be a very serviceable TE but Quarless has the potential to be a star. PSU has to get him back into action so he can be an effective weapon against Michigan.

SI Breaks Down The Big Ten
SI.com has their Big Ten breakdown posted here, while it is unremarkable for it's lock-step predictability it also seems to make little sense. They predict PSU will go 5-3 in conference and 9-3 overall. One can only assume the losses would be to Tosu, Michigan, and Wisconsin, which I can accept. It is certainly a possible outcome.
They have Iowa sharing 4th place with the Nittany Lions, but this is where it gets weird. SI calls Iowa a "Sleeper" but still predicts them to go 5-3 in conference while missing Tosu and Michigan! OOOH! Their so talented they'll go 9-3 while only playing 2 of the four top rated teams in the conference! Their is also mad talk of felony charges on Hawkeye Pages!
Read it and be frustrated!
