How Are You Spending Your Bye Week?

I am making the trek to Columbia, SC to watch the Gamecocks take on the Volunteers. It should be a good game, however, the best part will be the fact that I will be in a luxury box! I will be able to enjoy an SEC game without having to mingle with the unwashed masses teaming beneath me. Really, the best of all worlds.

What is Different After Beating OSU?

Right now, very little. Penn State remains third in both the AP and Coach's polls as well as the BCS standings. However, PSU is now receiving some first place votes in Coach's Poll while Alabama gets no first place votes. Odd.

Regardless, Penn State has cemented its strangle hold on third place and now seems to be pressing Alabama for second place. The Lions trail Alabama by only 25 votes in the coaches and 29 votes in the AP polls which leaves the Lions in good position to hop into the championship game (provided, of course, one of those teams lose and PSU wins out).

Just as a heads up, Texas still has to play:

@ Texas Tech
Baylor
@ Kansas
Texas A&M

There is also the Big Twelve championship game should they survive this run through the regular season.

Alabama still has to play:

Arkansas State
@ LSU
Mississippi State
Auburn

As well as a possible SEC championship game.

At this point it looks more likely that Texas will lose a game before Alabama does. Which means PSU vs. Alabama for the title looks pretty good.

Should both teams lose a game, it will probably be PSU vs. Texas. This is because Texas will still have played in and presumably won the Big 12 Title. This is because the hold the tie-breaker with Oklahoma. I don't see OU getting a shot at the title without being able to win their own league.

Lions Are Masters of Their Own Domain

Penn State is up to sixth in the AP poll after a wild weekend in College football. Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Missouri, and Texas are the five teams ahead of the Lions. The three Big 12 teams and the two SEC teams all play one another. The following games will put PSU firmly in control of their own destiny! Not only will these be great games but now you have a vested interest in the outcome.

Texas @ Oklahoma on 10/11/08
Missouri @ TX on 10/18/08
Alabama @ LSU on 11/08/08

Ideally for Penn State, Texas will beat Oklahoma then immediately have a big let down the next week against Missouri. Then Alabama beats LSU (assuming LSU has already dropped one game to either Florida or Georgia). This would mean that PSU would play Missouri for the National Title! GWAH!

The absolute key for PSU is that Texas beats Oklahoma. Should Oklahoma beat Texas the likelihood of PSU hopping the remaining four teams ahead of them is very low.

This is all predicated on the fact that PSU wins out the rest of its games. Which means PSU will have to win at the Horseshoe (hasn't been done in 30 years), beat Michigan (hasn't been done in 12 years), beating Wisconsin, and besting Sparty. This was just to illustrate what some of the most important games are in order for Penn State to play for the title!

The National Title, Of BCS Crap

With the selection of LSU and Tosu to play for the National Title in January there is sure to be a tidal wave of controversy. However, I pose this question to you: Who really cares? There answer is: Georgia, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, USC, Missouri, Hawaii, blah, blah, blah, blah. I will start this conversation with this, I have no problem with LSU being in the title game.

However, Ohio St lucked the fuck out. Plain and simple. They managed to win out there "Tour of Ohio" out of conference schedule. They weren't the best team in the country last week, or the week before. The Buckeyes advanced for the sole reason that they didn't play (though, if there is a year where that should play a substantial role, this is it). I'll be the first to admit that the Big Ten is down this year. And yet, all the other conferences will be passed over in order to give the Buckeyes another opportunity to be blown the fuck out in a championship game. It will work out, it isn't like the Buckeyes got destroyed by the cream of the SEC last year or anything. If Tosu gets crushed this year there has got to be a 3 year embargo on them being in the championship game.

Does anyone give Tosu a chance in this one, right now? What is the spread? 10+? 14+? I really can't wait to see the Big ten embarrassed again at the hands of the SEC! Isn't it time for some other turd to get smushed aside from the Buckeyes?

Oh, and PSU is going to be playing Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl. I am a huge PSU fan, and I hope that PSU does a little turd smushing of their own, but is anyone excited about this matchup?
