Go State!Of The Patriot-NewsBY BOB FLOUNDERSPenn State's initial post-summer camp depth chart revealed few surprises.
The Nittany Lions open Saturday against Akron at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m., and ESPN2 will televise the contest.
Head coach Joe Paterno yesterday unveiled the players likely to start vs. the Zips.
The big question at the start of PSU's summer practices involved the offensive line. Who would join left tackle Levi Brown up front?
Third-year sophomore Gerald Cadogan is slotted as the left guard, with third-year sophomore A.Q. Shipley at center and fifth-year senior Robert Price at right guard.
Fourth-year junior John Shaw, a Spring Grove graduate, has beaten out fourth-year junior Chris Auletta for the right tackle job.
Junior quarterback Anthony Morelli leads an offensive backfield that includes senior tailback Tony Hunt and junior fullback Matt Hahn.
Sophomore Derrick Williams and redshirt sophomore Deon Butler are the starting wideouts, and senior Patrick Hall is the tight end.
The defense is led by one of the country's top linebacker corps, featuring senior All-American Paul Posluszny on one flank and junior Dan Connor on the other. A third returning starter, fifth-year senior Tim Shaw, is inside.
PSU's defensive line includes seniors Jay Alford and Ed Johnson inside, and senior Jim Shaw and third-year sophomore Josh Gaines at ends.
A rebuilt secondary has sophomore Justin King and redshirt sophomore Tony Davis at the cornerback spots and senior Donnie Johnson at strong safety.
PSU lists senior Nolan McCready or sophomore Anthony Scirrotto as the starting free safety, meaning a clear-cut winner hasn't emerged.
Scirrotto is also listed as first-string punt returner, with Williams and junior Rod Kinlaw as the kick returners.
