Penn State may have lost 28-6 on Saturday but the game was much closer than the score suggests.
The Defense played a great game limiting the powerful Buckeyes offense to 14 points. Ted Ginn and Gonzales were kept under wraps, for the most part. Troy Smith did have some excellent (heart-breaking) plays but he didn't look like a dominant Heisman candidate. Penn State's Defense came out and played hard from the very beginning, there was no quit in the Lions. This was a nice change from two weeks ago when the team seemed flat.(Hey-o!)
The Offense played a pretty good game. First, the good then the bad. The running game has really come together over the last few weeks. Tony Hunt had a great game, rushing for over 100 yds and the offensive line opened the running lanes all day. What was frustrating was the O-line's inability to pick up the first down in short-yardage situations. But, all in all, the running game looked good to very good. The passing game on-the-other-hand did not look nearly as good. AMMO has not been able to connect with the young receivers all year and it was frustratingly apparent on Saturday. The offense went from lining up D-will at every position on the field to looking his way only a few times. (BUBBLE SCREEN DAMMNIT!) The passing game has really struggled. This has been due to a couple of drops and a lot of misplaced passes. I'm not ready to pull Morelli yet. I think he is the team's best chance to win but Morelli needs to step up and play better football. He needs to go out and win some games instead of just trying not to lose them. For the offense to be successful there has to be more production out of the QB position. I think Morelli is the guy to create that spark (or so I hope).
The NW game should be a chance for the Lions to hone their skills and hopefully get the passing game going.
GO STATE! BEAT the WILDCATS!
