We are in the doldrums of the year when it comes to college football. Spring practice isn't underway, the spring game/draft is a month away, all is quiet in Nittany Nation. This is exactly the way a Penn State Football fan should want it. Let's examine the situation. Off-field news is almost always bad news. This time of year all news about the Lions is off-field news. No off-field news is good news.
The past few off-seasons have been full of juicy gossip and drama involving fights, trials. Last year we were in the throws of the Pryor-Sweepstakes, T. Sales got arrested, rumors were swirling regarding Joe choosing a successor, Quarless got a DUI during State Patty's Day, Chris Bell was kicked off the team for attacking another player, Pringle was fondling himself in the stacks, it was a busy off-season to say the least.
This year we are treated to the lovely silence of players behaving nicely and not getting into legal trouble. It is nice isn't it? News is so slow that BSD is covering PSU baseball! Soon, cats and dogs will live in harmony and Penn State will make it into the NCAA tournament! I mean, for the love of god, Joe must be on cloud 9 right now!
Life is good.
Oh yeah, by the way, Sean Lee is a goddamn bear!

Quarless and State Patty's Day
The rumor is floating around that Quarless was suspended after racking up his second underage drinking citation in eight months. If true, odds are it happened on State Patty's Day. Could any of these have been the incident that led to Quarless' downfall?
Or...

At 12:28 a.m. Saturday, police were called about a man urinating from a balcony at 340 E. Beaver Ave. But the victim could not say what apartment the man was at or provide a description, police said.
Or...
Police came to the rescue of a lost, drunken man who was “trapped” inside the State College Area High School’s track at 650 Westerly Parkway about 2:30 a.m. Saturday. He apparently was too intoxicated to get over a 4-foot-tall fence, according to a police report. The man will be cited with public drunkenness.Nothing brings bestial side of man like some green beer!

State Patty's Day
State Patty's Day is an unofficial, student run, holiday where students celebrate St. Patrick's Day early (so they won't be on spring break and can squeeze in an awesome holiday at PSU). It was always a grass roots movement in support of Irish festivities and binge drinking early in the day (all things I am completely behind, BTW).
Apparently, there is an organization trying trying to move State Patty's day into a more official capacity; Safegaurd Old State (SOS) is that organization. The Collegian has an article on it here. I had never heard of SOS until I read that article apparently they are all about:

Safeguard Old State is a grassroots student-alumni advocacy coalition dedicated
to safeguarding the traditions and rights of all Penn Staters. We are concerned
about advocating students’ rights and serving as an administrative
watchdog.
We seek to educate the PSU community about, and lobby for the
continuation and revitalization of those traditions which further, primarily,
the goals of shared governance, exercise of student autonomy (particularly in
relation to student led activities and the student activity fee) as well as
fostering a culture of respect among University administrators toward such a
student-centered environment.
We are committing to helping return this
University to glory, both with large and small steps toward a brighter future.
We seek to foster a renaissance in student and alumni life, both within Happy
Valley and among the global Penn State community.

In relation to State Patty's Day, however, they are looking to making the holiday a University sanctioned event. What is peculiar about this is that both the students and the administration are not pleased with this idea. The administration points out all the problems associated with State Patty's Day and some students bristle at the idea of the celebration coming under University control.
SOS has set up there own website here (as a tool to help control your thoughts, man!)
Here's my take, have the celebration: Why does State Patty's Day need to be University sanctioned? I am also curious why an organization devoted to "...safeguarding the traditions and rights of all Penn Staters." wants the University to be involved in an unofficial, dangerous, and ridiculously awesome tradition at Penn State?
Go out, have fun, do what you want, but please don't be an idiot!
