Arrington Curses Sports Cafe

I had posted previously about the rumors that College Football God, Lavar Arrington, was planning on Buying the Sports Cafe. The rumors were that the new bar would've been called Linebacker U. This, of course, would've been the greatest bar of old time and would've been a license to print money. However, it turns out that Kevin Anderson (current owner of the bar) had only been stringing Lavar along in order to drum up free publicity surrounding the reopening of the Sports Cafe. In short, Kevin Anderson is a despicable douchebag.

Lavar voiced his disgust in comments to The Collegian:
"I hope the plague falls upon the Sports Café," he said, adding "I hope it's rat infested. Frickin' roach infested."
Which, if you've ever been in the Sports Cafe, isn't really too big a stretch.

Lavar went on to say:
"I hope he never makes another dollar off of Sports Café," Arrington said about Anderson Thursday night.
Lavar is not completely deterred from opening up his own establishment in State College saying:
"Someway, somehow I'm still going to find way to get up there and be a part of the Penn State community that made me be who I am today," LaVar Arrington said. "I'm not going to let petty and feeble-minded individuals that are a part of this situation dictate whether I'm there or not. I'm going to find a place. ... I'm going to find my way to Penn State, I promise you that."
YES! DO IT LAVAR! You represent all that is good in PSU and we would love to have your presence in the area. If you ever open your bar give me a call and I will spend all the money I possibly could there. Don't let the Feckless Douchebags such as Kevin Anderson get you down!

You also have to think that publicly embarrassing and enraging Lavar Arrington has to be the stupidest thing you could do in life. QBs have done far less than Anderson and Lavar has sent them to collect their retirement. Troy Aikman still wakes up in a cold sweat at nights thinking about how Lavar destroyed him.

Penn State Reading

Jeff Rice at the CDT has a novel concept; if PSU plays better on offense and maintains good play on defense, the Lions could be good. If not, they will be ok. I don't know if Mr. Rice needed an entire story to convey this thought. Future hard-hitting articles for Jeff will include: Joe Paterno: an old coach, Jay Paterno is Joe's Son, Larry Johnson is Good at Recruiting, Penn State's Colors are Blue and White.

The PPG has an article about how The real Derrick Williams will show up this year. Lets all hope so. If anything close to the 2005 D-Will arrives I will be ecstatic.
Josh Gaines is enjoying but does not understand his newfound power:
"When I talk, people listen," said Gaines, a senior co-captain entering his third season as a starter."It's a great weapon," he said. "So, I'm going to try to use this weapon to actually do good with it. People listen to what I have to say for some reason."

Use this terrible power only for good, Josh. Only FOR GOOD!

The PTR has an article up on Tyrell Sales. This is required reading because Sales or #46 to you and I, is going to be the most experienced LB PSU has.

Easily the best article of the bunch is Brian's great breakdown of PSU over at MGOBLOG. He is great and has more time on his hands than a man should.

Sports Cafe To Be Linebacker U

The CDT is reporting, in the on-going acquisition and transformation of the Sports Cafe, that Lavar Arrington is listed on a pending liquor license transfer for the abandoned watering hole.

In more interesting news, the CDT goes on to say that, according to Borough Zoning Officer Herman Slaybaugh:
“I know it’s going to be called Linebacker U,”
This, of course, is fucking awesome.
Hopefully everything will be ready for an opening before, or on, the opening of the 2008 season. If it is ready by this fall it will instantly become a must see for all returning alumni and visiting fans. I know I have suggested it before, but Lavar, if you're listening, the following drinks HAVE TO BE AVAILABLE!
The QB Killa:

A terribly strong brew of 11 types of liquor which could render Troy
Aikman unable to remember his own name.

The Line Leaper:
A jaeger, voldka, and tobasco shot dropped into a Red Bull, guaranteed
to propel you over a hapless Illini offensive line!

Lavar, you have to make this happen buddy. Get in touch with me and I would gladly be the first to quaff such a brew. Even if you don't give me a call I may just show up demanding that they make me these drinks and then loudly proclaim what they are!

Any other drink suggestions are definitely welcome here and, should he contact me, I will pass the entire list along to Mr. Arrington!

Linebacker U: The Battle for the Throne (redux)?

Penn State and the Aggies will meet in this year's Alamo Bowl (Dec. 29th 8 Pm EST) in a rematch of the 1999 Alamo bowl. The 1999 contest was built up to see who deserved the title: Linebacker U. Now you might say "JB, that is poppycock! PSU has always been and will always be Linebacker U." Well, if that is the case then you weren't paying attention to Texas A&M circa 1999. Observe:

"The game gets me pumped up," Glenn said. "They do have Arrington, but we have linebackers who are just as good. We just don't get the recognition they do.

"We've got Brian Gamble, who is a freshman who came in and is doing a good job. Cornelius Anthony has made a lot of tackles and Roylin Bradley speaks for himself, when he comes and plays. With the depth that we have, our linebackers are just as good. I believe our linebackers and our backups could start anywhere."

When asked what team really is "Linebacker U," Glenn had a quick answer.

"I believe it's really Texas A&M," Glenn said. One indication in the disparity in talent can be found by comparing the honors lists of the two schools. Punter Shane Lechler was the only Texas A&M player selected for the All-Big 12 team. The Nittany Lions had three players -- defensive end Courtney Brown, Arrington and middle linebacker Brandon Short -- as consensus All-American selections.

Find the Article here.

You may also remember that this got Lavaar a little fired up.

"History says that Penn State is Linebacker U., forever," Arrington said. "Anybody else who claims that name is just a wannabe. That's the reason I went to Penn State, to play for Linebacker U. That's something I'll defend, with all my honor."

Hell YES! That is what I am talking about!

Find that article here.

PSU also went on to steamroll the Aggies 24-0 in that game.

This year, PSU yet again has a potential AA at Linebacker in this year's Bednarik Award Winner, Dan Connor (3rd straight year the award went to a Nittany Lion), and the Lions arrive at the Alamo Bowl after a disappointing year. This year, however, there will be no debate over who has the best Linebacking corps. The Aggies' two leading tacklers are LBs Mark Dodge and Misi Tupe with 108 and 89 tackles respectively. The duo also has 4.5 and 4 TFL on the season. These numbers, however, seem quite piddly in comparison to Dan Connor and Sean Lee who racked up 136 and 124 tackles respectively. The two standouts also had 14 and 9.5 TFL this season.

The two talented Nittany Lionbackers also lead a defense which gives up 8.5 fewer pts/game this season. The choice is clear, PSU was, is, and always will be Linebacker U.

What You Want In A Linebacker

This is what you want to hear about your linebackers, especially at Linebacker U.
"He's quick-tempered; just a wild man as soon as he gets the pads on," Connor said of Lee. "Off the field, he's a soft-spoken guy -- pretty quiet. But he's one of the most competitive guys I've ever met.

"If you're a lineman trying to block him and do your job, you're offending him and ticking him off and he's going to do whatever he can to try to put you back."

See the whole article at Pitt Trib. Review.

Sean Lee cares not for your desire to block him! It only increases his RAGE!I am going to tackle you so hard! RAAAAAA!

Yancich Commits to PSU

Mike Yancich committed to come and play football for PSU in 2008, Fight on State is reporting. He is a 4 star recruit LB recruit who just couldn't turn down an invite from Joe Paterno to come and play for Linebacker U!

Dan Connor Returns!

Dan Connor announced yesterday that he will return to the Lions for one more year. WHEW! PSU really needed Dan to come back and play another year. His presence solidifies the entire linebacking corps. Without Dan, Sean Lee would be the most experienced LB on the field for Penn State with only one year starting. Not an ideal situation. Now, PSU can field two excellent LBs and let some of the young talent PSU has been recruiting at LB fight it out for the third spot.
Really, without Connor in the lineup PSU's defense looks skimpy near the line of scrimmage. However, with Connor he can step up and make some plays and let the young defensive line develop.
This is a very good day for the Nittany Lions!

Connor's Future

Dan Connor has been an absolute stud for PSU over the past two years. At this point, however, there is no guarantee Dan will be back for his senior season. Dan, clearly, has yet to make up his mind as he has been ducking the question when posed. Poz returned after hurting his knee in last year's Orange Bowl. That is no guarantee that Connor will be back seeing as how he has witnessed how quickly an injury can occur.
Losing Connor to the draft before his senior season would be a big blow to Linebacker U. His absence would need to be filled by Sean Lee (who should be great) but this would leave two gaping holes at the Linebacker position. While PSU has had solid LB recruiting years recently there is no guarantee that players will transfer from high school ball smoothly. Here is a list of players who could be vying for PT provided Connor does not return:
Bowman, Navorro LB Fr./Fr.
Brown, Dontey LB Jr./So
Gbadyu, Bani LB Fr./Fr.
Hayes, Jerome LB So./Fr.
Hull, Josh LB So./Fr.
Lee, Sean * LB So./So
Ridenhour, Spencer * OLB Jr./So.
Sales, Tyrell * LB Jr./So.
Yocum, Nic LB Sr./Jr.
This list will also include the incoming fresheman:
Nathan Stupar (see below)
Andrew Dailey
Chris Colasanti

There are a couple of letter winners in that group and a lot of them have seen playing time over the last couple of years. Hopefully, two of them can step up and play well if needed. This much is clear, if Connor does leave it will leave a wide open battle to earn a starting spot at Linebacker U!
