Nick Saban Can Eat A Nut

I received this angry email from a long-time friend and lover of the blue and white, The Brewer Patriot.

Anyway, apparently Mr. Saban ruffled The Brewer's feathers and I received the following rant in my email as a result. Enjoy.

“Coach Paterno is probably one of the greatest coaches of all time in college football,” Saban said during his press conference, “not in terms of how many games he’s won, but how he’s contributed to the game in so many positive ways.”

The first part is bad. "Probably one of the greatest"? Get over yourself, just say that he is one of the greatest and move on. And the second part about "not in terms of how many games he's won" is shitty too. It IS in terms of how many games he has won, by it's very definition. He has done so many other things as well, but is also the winningest D-1 coach in history. It is something I see a lot of people say, that he has helped college football which is obviously true, but they pass over just how good a football coach he is too.

His quote would be much more accurate by these simple changes, "“Coach Paterno is one of the greatest coaches of all time in college football,” Saban said during his press conference, “not just in terms of how many games he’s won, but also how he’s contributed to the game in so many positive ways.”

In other news, I like getting fired up about small things.

Yes, yes he does.

LET'S GET FIRED UP (over small things)!

How Will the Lion's Fare?

The off-season has been thankfully quiet which has left us with little to talk about since the Blue/White game. However, now that the preseason magazines are out it really has me thinking about expectations for this year's season.

What can and should we expect out of the 2010 Lions? The Lions certainly have a tough schedule with three intimidating road games. One must also remember that the Lions have a number of unknowns coming into this year; QB and offensive line being the most glaring. This is not to say that these areas will be weaknesses, however, we simply do not know what we will get.

Which leads me to ask, how many games will PSU win this year?

Eight wins is a very safe bet with up to nine wins being a good year, ten wins being a great year. Likewise, PSU has a real potential to win six or seven games. So, cast your votes to so we can see where the Blue-White Faithful stand.

How many games will Penn State win this year?
6, already on the ledge.
7, a bit of a Eeyore.
8, I've accepted my fate.
9, fired up!

Getting Fired Up!

Just re-watched PSU vs. Tosu 2008. It is as awesome as you remember.

Navarro was a goddamn bear. The thought of teams having to account for both him and Sean get me all pumped.

What really stuck out to me though was how (relatively) early in the game TP's fumble was. In my mind it sticks out as the play of the game and I remembered Rubin poking the ball away late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

While it was the play of the game, the fumble occurred in the 3rd quarter and PSU was trailing at the time! The next drive is where Devlin leads the team down the field and then pushes the ball into the end-zone himself.

Which leads me to mourn the loss of Devlin all over again. Mr. Devlin was a good player who knew the offense and could clearly play at a high level in college. It was clearly illustrated as he just steps right in and leads PSU down the field on a game winning drive, on the road, on national TV. The guy could play.

If you need a reminder as to why offensive linemen are some of the most important players on the field just go and watch the last quarter of this game. Shipley and the gang completely took over the game. They just pushed the Buckeyes out of the way. The O-line is the reason why the Lions widened the lead to seven and probably won.

Also, they played Brandi Carlile's The Story which just made me go download it and get all fired up!

I feel like 2009 is going to be another good year.

I'm all jacked up on coffee and Penn State's excellence!

Jay Paterno Is Now Blogging!

Jay Has A Blog. It is called the HD Journal. There was much rejoicing throughout the land.

The blog is essentially an extension of Jay's activities on Twitter as he will be able to expand on the questions folks submit to him via direct messages.

All we can hope for is that Jay drops some tasty knowledge nuggets on our domes during the off-season. Honestly, is there anything else to do during this but hang on every word Jay Tweets or blogs? I suppose we could hold our collective breath until Joe acknowledges twitter but it would just leave us vaguely purple and unconscious.

I am fired up.

I'm Drunk On Spring Football.... And Wine

This is what I'm talking about.

ESPN has caught the fever. I'm personally rocking a fever of a hundred and three.

The only cure? More Penn State Football. Will I last another 3.5 months? Stay tuned.

However, this is a love that needs to be sung from the highest point known to man...space. I love Darryl Clark. I may also have a man-crush on Sean Lee. Apparently, Adam Rittenberg shares my man-love, not really. He is a "journalist", I am but a lowly blogger. Regardless. I am fired up in a way that only a bottle of wine and the high-expectations-of-spring can bring.

Mr. Rittenburg makes a good point. The Lions need to post another championship season in order to assert the alpha-position of the Big Ten. Like many packs, force is necessary to run the show.

There are some folks on ESPN who think that PSU will finish no better than third in the Big Ten. I think PSU will be first or second. I see the Buckeyes as the only real threat to the Lions' chances to win the conference championship. Disagree? Post your gripes below.

A Great End....

The Lions played great football today. (period)

Offense:
Run. Pass. Whatever. The Lions played as well as they could today. Clark threw for 300+ yards and 4 TDs, he also ran for a TD. Royster went for over 100 total yards. Green showed a flash of brilliance. The big plays were back and the O-line dominated MSU.

Defense:
The defense was firing on all cylinders this evening. Ringer was as ineffective as a turd in the current. He was in control of nothing and was completely at the whim of the Penn State defense. Yet again, the Penn State's defense is a killer when it comes to big time Big Ten Running Backs. Maybe Ringer and Wells can't sit around and hold each other's hand, and tell each other how great he is. Awesome.

MSU's offensive line was visibly terrified of PSU's pass rush from the very beginning. I should have kept a running count of how many false starts there were. I'm surprised they didn't line up tackles flanking the QB. If MSU's offensive line had just showed up in prison, Aaron Maybin would have 5 new bitches.

It was a great game. One had the time to step back and savor how great a season this was as well as wallow in how much better PSU was than their hapless opponents.

I am fired up! (I hope the Lions don't face OrSU!)

The Polls SHOULD Piss You Off!!!!

As most of you already know, Texas Tech hurdled Penn State in the BCS standings. BSD is counseling for patience and they are probably right. I, however, am fucking pissed off. (as an aside, BSD has very good reasons why you shouldn't be pissed off. However, I am filled with a blinding white rage. What patience I had dissolved a while ago.)

Texas Tech? Seriously? What the fuck is the matter with these computers? Penn State is still ranked #2 in both the Harris and Coaches Poll. But these Texas Tech yahoos are #2 in the BCS? Where the fuck do you figure they make up the points? Texas Tech has played the following teams so far this year:
Eastern Washington
Nevada
Southern Methodist
Massachusetts
Kansas St.
Nebraska
Texas A&M
Kansas
Texas
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma
Baylor
And you think PSU was ducking people in the out of conference schedule? Seriously? But now we will gladly hand over #2 to these fucking pretenders?

Texas Tech is a fine offensive freak show but National Title contenders they are not. Their biggest test was an exhausted Texas team who they got to play at home. Odds are, they will be beaten in similar high-scoring, wet-tissue defense game against Oklahoma State next week. Right now, however, I am pissed off.

This is a TT team that gave up 24 points to Eastern Washington, the same team who was taken to the wire by a terrible Nebraska team (37-31).

No, no! They are clearly the second best team in the Country! Why would I be pissed? I'm happy for them. Nope, totally happy. Especially because TT's head coach is clearly a genius. I mean, observe:
"Oklahoma State is now the biggest game in the history of this year."
Via Double-T Nation
Riiiiiight.

Obviously, none of my ridiculous rantings will have any effect. PSU still needs to go out and take care of business over the next three weeks. Maybe this is exactly what the Lions need to refocus the Lions on the task at hand. Still. Yeah. I am fucking pissed.

Initial, Visceral Reactions To The Game

Wow. Two huge monkeys come off the back of the Nittany Lions in successive weeks. First, the Lions end a long losing streak to Michigan. Second, the Lions win at the Horseshoe for the first time in 30 years. This post is not about stats. This post is about raw, vaguely drunken, emotions.

Ohio State is a very good, if slightly predictable, football team. Tonight, Ohio State did not consistently move the ball effectively. Unless, of course, if it was third down. If it was third down it was almost a guaranteed 15 yard pass play. Odd.

Penn State has the best defense in the Big Ten.

Penn State seemed to wear out a good Ohio State defense.

TP looked like a Frosh late in the game.

As always....

Pat Devlin is the best backup QB in the Big Ten.

The offensive line and Royster got better as the game went along!

I am really incredibly happy.

Who hasn't played anybody now, bitches!

There's Nothing Left To Say

Apologies for no post up earlier in the day.

I don't believe there is anything else which can be said about this game. ESPN is hyping this game big time and rightfully so. This is not only a Big Ten Title elimination game but also a National Title elimination game.

Some Penn State fans feel quite confident about the game this weekend. I am not a part of that bunch. I am terribly nervous about this game, however, a certain thought brought me a great deal of peace today: This is a valid test for Penn State. Should the Lions lose we should all admit that we are not a National Championship caliber team. However, should the Lions win against the #9 team in the nation, on the road, at night, with 100,000 buckeye fans going crazy, with Gameday in attendance, the Lions will deserve a shot at the title.

It should be a great game.

A Sea of Red......and CONAN!

Jim Tressel wants the Horseshoe to be "A sea of Red" on Saturday. Or so he said during his weekly press conference.

"And speaking of wardrobes, we wanted to make sure we made it loud and clear that we need to be wearing red on Saturday. We need to make that place a sea of red..."

Touche, Ohio State. Touche. You have managed to create your own "insert team color here" out. Very good. Turnabout is fair play!

Oh, Conan! I didn't see you there.

Yes, I am here.

Awesome. Hey, maybe you could fire the Blue White Masses up for me?

Reasons To Be Fired Up For Michigan

1. Penn State needs to stay focused for every game left on the schedule.
2. A Whiteout has been declared for Saturday's game. So strap on the white and lose your mind!
3. Continuing to own PSU is one of the only things Michigan fans can cling to. Take their heart and crush their soul!
4. Remember 2005? Yeah. Me too.
5. Paternoville.
6. Lydell Sergeant actually enlisted in the army and he's been given a field commission to "Lieutenant of Interceptions"
7. Football Saturdays in State College. Once you've been there nothing else compares.
8. For the Seniors.
9. For Joe.

UPDATE At The Half!

Penn State has looked great so far in this game. The Lions are up by 17 on the road and would be up by at least another TD but for some early miscues. Wisconsin looks completely overmatched on both sides of the ball.

Now, for some notable stats:
Clark is on 5 of 10 for 50 yards. Some big drops have retarded his stats. However, he is having a statistically poor passing game and PSU is still on pace to score 48 pts.

Evan Royster is having a good game. ER has racked up 58 yds. on 11 carries. Not statistically great, however, he is doing some tough running between the tackles. Look for him and Green to put up numbers in the second half.

Oh, and Derrick Williams is wildly inconsistent in the kicking game but still extremely dangerous. The only problem is that he is dangerous for both PSU and their opponents.
The defense looks solid and opportunistic.

Aaron Maybin is a goddamn bear-man!

I'm pounding Lagers and loving life!
